    2004 $20 Misprinted Star Note

I work at a bank and I come across rare currency from time to time. I have seen many star notes but never one like this. It is a 2004 $20 star note that is misaligned. The printing is all on the top of the bill so there is a large gap at the bottom. How rare is this? I have never seen anything like it. How much would someone estimate this is worth. It is in very good condition for a circulated bill. (no tears, stains or noticable creases) FYI.. I am %100 sure it is genuine US currency.

    Thanks

No problem. If you don't have a shot, a serial # and series # would help, too.

This is probably a better picture with the black background.

Do you have a picture of the back, also? Sorry about that, but it's important to know if it's only one side of it or both sides.

Here is what I can tell you:

A similar note sold in 2009 at Heritage Auctions for $253 (Fr. 2073-G* $20 1981 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.. ... Error Notes: Miscellaneous Errors). However, it was 1981 Series, and there were 2,688,000 star notes printed for FRB G. Also, there was more of the next note below it visible. Yours has a small sliver of note 'below' it visible. Heritage notes that:

"Fr. 2073-G* $20 1981 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.
This star note is miscut in that the top edge is below the frame line and the bottom edge shows a sliver of the adjacent note. This is only the second miscut star note that we have offered in the last eight years. This example also has a much higher grade than the previous star error."

Yours is a series 2004, and FRB K only printed 384,000 star notes, which is much lower. However, yours also displays a lot less of the note 'below' it (a tiny sliver).

The best bet would be to have it graded. But it would be worth something to someone most likely.

I'm not a currency collector, but I do know that a lower valued (e.g. amount printed) star notes is better, especially when you are talking 5 to 6 digits of reprints (e.g. 10,000 or 384,000). To give you an example of how many other star notes were printed, the FRB L notes had 6,400,000 star notes printed (USPaperMoney.Info: Series 2004 $20).

I'd still like to see the back of the note though.

Hope this information helps. There is a lot of information at USPaperMoney.Info if you need more.

    Thanks!

Wow thanks a bunch. I knew it was rare but wasn't sure how rare. I have always thought about collecting currency since I work in bank, but this really makes me want to start. Here is the back image for you to look at...

I plan to be a frequent visitor to the forum. Any additional information on the bill would be helpful of course. Where might I go to have someone grade a bill? Thanks again!

Tylrmat, you can send it into a company like PMG: Paper Money Grading, Paper Currency Grading | Paper Money Guaranty There is a link called 'Services and Submission' there.
