Thread: Can there be a toned 70?

Smile Can there be a toned 70?

I am asking this forum for their opinion. Should MS-70 or PROOF 70 coins, with toning, deserve the perfect grade? Some grades of coins should be slightly affected by the type of toning because it does look nice and doesn't seem to corrode the coin, but it is because of oxidation and external particles on the surface.

What say you - Why or why not?

Tough subject. I always purchased non-toned coins, since I believed toning was damage.

However, toning is actually quite appealing to some people. I've seen some PR-70 coins a sibling has bought tone naturally and they look great. The thing is, they are already slabbed, so who is to downgrade it?

I think that they do deserve the perfect grade, because you are looking at the strike of the coin, rather then, as you said, any oxidation/surface particles.

So, my vote is definitely yes, they do deserve it!

    A 70 is a perfect coin.
Toning can be looked at as an imperfection or flaw to the surface. There are two sides of every coin.
There might not be a single nick or any signs of wear on a coin, and I'd call it a 69, no matter what the toning. Color should have a roll in a coin's grade when it comes into difference between 69's or 70's.

NOW, if we are talking about non-modern coins...THAT IS TOUGH!
But, I think I would still stick to it.
MS70's shouldn't be drastically or slightly toned no matter how perfect they are.

What's the difference between a modern and non-modern coin? I mean, besides the obvious: age.

But if you are saying toning is holding a coin back from 70, then toning should hold a 65 back from being a 65, for instance.

I grade coins by the strike, however eye appeal is major factor in purchasing. How many fugly coins do you see go for great prices, no matter how nice of a strike it is? Not many!!

Hmmm...well I'd say if it's light toning I could see a 70 but heavy toning covers up so much sometimes that you should not give it a 70 IMO.
