    Old Collector, New to Numismatics

    Hey all,

I had been browsing for a few weeks now and saw that you all might be able to use some membership. I like the layout and the attitude here so I figured I'd stop lurking and join the fun.

I used to be a HUGE sports card and memorabilia collector but that market has gone to the dogs, and as I get older it just isn't as cool. So I got a job at a coin shop and being around this stuff all day is so awesome. I meet the coolest people and see the coolest things. I have been in the hobby less than a year so I am still learning but I hope I can also give some helpful input to those who are a little less far along as myself.

Anyways, that's me. I do have one question for the community. I have the rest of my life to collect so I'm in no rush, so I don't have a niche yet (I guess I'll find a type I really love) but despite my job-required knowledge, I haven't actually started collecting yet. What type coin would you recommend me collecting first??? Thanks for the input guys, and don't hesitate to reply, razz me, or message me.

Welcome Strength! Glad to have you here. As far as what type of coin you should collect...Everyone will have a different opinion, and very bias.
What I can tell you is that if I could start all over again, my first album would be the U.S. Type set album. I really feel it is the perfect type of collection to start. It makes you look at every type of coin and learn about each one. While you do that, you may just find a niche type that interests you.

Welcome to the forums! I've been away a little bit, so sorry for the late reply

I'd say the coin you'd want to start collecting first is the one you like What specific designs do you like?

    Welcome to the forum,

Interesting selection in username. And don't let Gbroke fool you, he and I are both Jefferson Nickel nuts and we would welcome another Jefferson collector to our club (look in groups section). They are inexpensive even in the uncirculated grades and are a good series to learn how to grade. Jefferson Nickels Rule! Maybe you need to see a photo of one to entice you!

Please stick around, we need regular posting members. Got any friends?

    Paul

lol Paul. I figured you would throw in the love for Jeffersons. I should have said in my post: "Aside from Jeffersons, obviously.."
