    Imaging Coin Surfaces

I'm trying out a new (for me) imaging technique that is giving promising results for showing details on coin surfaces. I finally got it set up to give just the right magnification to show Lincoln Cent date and MM in the full image field. Here's what the technique gives for my heavily-toned 57D that I use for most of my image comparisons:

Very nice detail although the light at 10-11 Oclock may be casting too harsh of shadows.

What kind of equipment are you using here? Same as in your other posts?

The light is a little too low angle and casts some shadows. It's either that or lose the surface detail, though I can probably bring the angle up a bit and still keep good detail.

Setup is a bit different: Nikon 5X Plan mounted on a 150mm EL-Nikkor on bellows. Gives about 3.75X magnification and the objective has super clarity. This image was a stacked composite of 5 focal planes.

Just got a Nikon 3X objective and clarity looks pretty good. Working distance is 80mm so there is plenty of room for flexibility in lighting. Here's the result:

Your photography is outstanding. I will assume that you are a variety collector?

Thanks very much. I only publish the good shots...

Yes, my collecting focus is Lincoln Wheat Cent Varieties. I also do Toners and put away any GemBU or nice OBW rolls I come across. For varieties I need to do both lower mag and higher mag shots so have been working on getting a 3-5X setup put together. Has been challenging, especially since I'm finding the camera itself is limiting me more than the lens and lighting...Ray
