The twenty cent piece was authorized by the Coinage Act of March 3, 1875, which was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. The resemblance to a quarter dollar piece was very similar, and caused confusion among businesses and the public, which lead this coin to being one of the shortage mintages in United States history.
